The Cardinal Rule


In the games played around my back deck by birds, almost invariably the pair of Cardinals rule. You can see that dominance here as another bird tries to land on the feeder but the mere presence of the male Cardinal keeps him from alighting. The Cardinal made no overt move--it just stood its ground and the other bird eventually flew off to wait for a better time to snack on some seeds.

And here I always thought it was the Blue Jay that was the big bully at the feeder. For being our state bird, I've seen relatively few of them here.
