baboon and ball

I took this picture last Summer at the NC State Zoo. Seeing the elderly baboon playing with the ball reminded me of that movie 2001 Space Odyssey that Stanley Kubrick directed. Of course in that movie it was a bone that the ape threw up into the air. A red ball would have been a lot prettier, y'know?

The Cardinal Rule

In the games played around my back deck by birds, almost invariably the pair of Cardinals rule. You can see that dominance here as another bird tries to land on the feeder but the mere presence of the male Cardinal keeps him from alighting. The Cardinal made no overt move--it just stood its ground and the other bird eventually flew off to wait for a better time to snack on some seeds.

snow fall in NC

This doesn't look great. It was originally in Quicktime (MOV) format and it didn't translate that well into MP4 but give it a look if you want. The resolution is good enough so you can tell it's snow, at least.

This was a snow fall that took place here in NC about a week ago. January 16/17 to be exact. I took this footage with my digital camera around 7am when I first got up. Most of the snow was gone by around 2pm when it started raining.

icy branches

This is from Sunday evening when we had freezing rain here in the Triad area of North Carolina. The tree were decorated with little icicles and their branches were bowed with the extra weight. It was pretty in a cold austere way.

Ma and Pa Cardinal

I took this one yesterday morning just an hour or so before leaving for a science conference. Dawn had just commenced and the birds were hungry!

Female Cardinal

I think she heard me rustling behind the window. I take these pictures from behind some blinds so as not to scare them away but occasionally they'll scrape against the window and startle the birds.
