wine

This is a picture I took a year and a half ago with my old 3MP camera. I'm putting it up on here partially due to the topic of wine being discussed on my other blog. The winery where I took this picture was very quiet due to it being a cold November day but there was still an austere beauty to the fields. The vines were young, only a few years old, and the fields had only started producing the year before. Quite a contrast to some areas in Europe where vines had been grown for over a thousand years.

a green bug

I took this picture back in the summer. Today's unusual warmth--it made it up to 70f during the afternoon--reminded me of those warm humid days that seemed to last forever. While the sun went down early today, making sure I wouldn't forget what season it truly is, at least the temperatures reminded me of summer.

Purple flowers for Anna

I love the contrast in color between the lush grass in front to the purple pansies in midfield and all the way back to the dark green of the junipers on the hill.

Anna commented on my not putting up a picture this past week. I've not taken any outdoor pictures in the past week or so which meant I needed to look for some old pictures. These two were taken back in April in Raleigh, NC at the WRAL television studio. The one below was taken from the same spot as the above photo but I just pulled back the zoom all the way.

It was a drizzly overcast day but that just helped the colors come out well.

drinking?

This reminds me of the line often used in Western movies: "Where can you get a drink in this town?"

As you can see, this squirrel was determined to get some water. He could smell it, I guess, but there's simply no possible way he'd ever be able to get to it. Still, he was there for several minutes trying to puzzle it out. Squirrels are notorious thieves--getting into all sorts of things we'd prefer that they'd leave alone--but in this case all that skill was to no avail. He never got that drink.

crane in the mist

It's a crane in the mist but not of the bird type. This fellow is quite tall and looms over the ER area of the UNC Hospital. I took the picture a few weeks ago when I was wondering about taking pictures of the snow. You can see a little of the snow on the ground and on the roofs of the buildings in the background.

Dirty Snowman

I took this picture early this afternoon before the snow turned to rain. We got about an inch in Chapel Hill, maybe an inch and a half, but to the west where I live we had over 2 inches. To those of you in northern climes that doesn't sound like much but it was enough to cancel school for much of the area and keep a lot of people from going to work. Weenies!

In any case, after I finished staining the slides I had to do for today I wandered around campus taking pictures of the snow before it melted away. Snow sure is pretty. (especially when it's going to leave again soon!)

You know, I really wonder how long it took some college kids to make this snowman. There really wasn't that much snow on the ground and the snowman was over 4 feet tall. They must have cleared a small field of snow to get that much together.
